Do Nearctic hover flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) engage in long?distance migration? An assessment of evidence and mechanisms

چکیده

Long-distance insect migration is poorly understood despite its tremendous ecological and economic importance. As a group, Nearctic hover flies (Diptera: Syrphidae: Syrphinae), which are crucial pollinators as adults biological control agents larvae, almost entirely unrecognized migratory examples of highly behavior among several Palearctic species. Here, we examined evidence mechanisms for four fly species (Allograpta obliqua, Eupeodes americanus, Syrphus rectus, ribesii) common throughout eastern North America using stable hydrogen isotope (?2H) measurements chitinous tissue, morphological assessments, abundance estimations, cold-tolerance assays. Although further studies needed, nonlocal isotopic values obtained from specimens collected in central Illinois support the existence long-distance fall Eu. to lesser extent S. ribesii rectus. Elevated americanus during expected autumn period supports such behavior. Moreover, high phenotypic plasticity morphology associated with dispersal coupled significant differences between local suggest that exhibits unique suite traits decrease costs flight. Finally, compared ostensibly nonmigratory A. was less cold tolerant, factor may be Collectively, our findings imply occurs flies, but consider methodological limitations study addition potential consequences these novel findings.

Revision of Nearctic Dasysyrphus Enderlein (Diptera: Syrphidae).

Dasysyrphus Enderlein (Diptera: Syrphidae) has posed taxonomic challenges to researchers in the past, primarily due to their lack of interspecific diagnostic characters. In the present study, DNA data (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase sub-unit I—COI) were combined with morphology to help delimit species. This led to two species being resurrected from synonymy (D. laticaudus and D. pacificus) ...

Checklist of the flower flies of Ecuador (Diptera, Syrphidae)

Syrphidae is one of the most speciose families of true flies, with more than 6,100 described species and worldwide distribution. They are important for humans acting as crucial pollinators, biological control agents, decomposers, and bioindicators. One third of its diversity is found in the Neotropical Region, but the taxonomic knowledge for this region is incomplete. Thus, taxonomic revisions ...

The phenology and pollen feeding of three hover fly (Diptera: Syrphidae) species in Canterbury, New Zealand

The phenology and sex ratios of three hover fly species on Canterbury farmland, New Zealand were recorded weekly from five yellow watertraps from October 15, 1993 to January 31,1997. Gut fullness, egg number and pollen content were recorded weekly from September 8, 1994 to July 25, 1996. Catches of Melanostoma fasciatum (Macquart) and Melang\ma novaezelandiae (Macquart) were higher during the s...
